Trade unionism may be in crisis, but it is not dead. In France, the main trade union organisations continue to bring together hundreds of thousands of workers, and remain key players in the struggle for emancipation, capable of bringing millions of people out onto the streets and bringing whole swathes of the economy to a standstill.
Confronted with a changing world of work, the explosion of job insecurity and the emergence of forms of work on the fringes of the wage economy, trade unionism is questioning itself and reinventing itself, and not without upheaval.
