Cet ouvrage aborde d’une façon novatrice, par le prisme de la domination de genre, un sujet d’études déjà défriché par les historien·nes : la constellation anarchiste française, dans ses diverses composantes (syndicalistes, illégalistes, milieux libres), entre 1871 et 1920.
L’autrice analyse le rapport à la violence souvent héroïsée et s’interroge sur la glorification virile, l’homophobie et la phraséologie misogyne qui avaient trait dans le milieu. Elle aborde la réappropriation des marqueurs de virilité par certaines militantes, le paraître libertaire, les tentatives d’égalité. Ce faisant, elle propose une relecture stimulante et passionnante de ces années charnières.
Anarchist Masculinities and Virility in the French Belle Époque
This book approaches in an innovative way, through the prism of gender domination, a topic already explored by historians: the French anarchist constellation, in its various components (syndicalists, illegalists, free circles), between 1871 and 1920.
The author analyzes the relationship to the violence often heroised and questions the glorification of manhood, homophobia and misogynistic phraseology that were common in the milieu. She discusses the reappropriation of markers of virility by some activists, the libertarian appearance, the attempts at equality. In doing so, she offers a stimulating and fascinating rereading of these pivotal years.
